Richard Sultanov was born in 1986 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Richard’s father was a prominent doctor and his mother – an art expert.
Richard Sultanov attended the prestigious English school no. 328 in St. Petersburg. During his childhood Richard Sultanov’s interests included soccer, swimming, hiking and reading, including reading English literature at an early age.
In 1998 Richard Sultanov moved with his family to California (USA) where in 2003 he graduated from Carmel High School with the highest honors (achieved over 4.0 GPA).
After graduation from high school, Richard Sultanov was admitted to the University of California at Davis (UC Davis). During his studies at UC Davis, Richard Sultanov was awarded several scholarships and actively participated in the student life, including in the Russian Society and the Student Business Club.
In 2007 Richard Sultanov graduated with honors from the University of California and moved to London to pursue a Master’s degree at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
During 2008-2009 Richard Sultanov completed an internship at Lufthansa’s consulting business where he advised major investors on aviation infrastructure projects.
In February 2009, during the Russian Business Week at the London School of Economics, Richard Sultanov was invited by Mr. Vladimir Yakunin, President of Russian Railways, to create a strategy and development function from scratch at Freight One (PGK), the largest rail operator in the world.
Richard Sultanov joined Freight One as Head of Strategy and Development. Richard Sultanov worked on developing the company’s strategy, finances, managed various strategic projects and M&A deals, was responsible for investor relations and interacted with the largest international financial institutions, oversaw all of the company’s international activities.
In 2011 Richard Sultanov was invited to join AECOM, an international Fortune 500 company. As a Senior Project Manager at AECOM, Richard Sultanov was responsible for a managing a number of complex projects dealing with developing transport infrastructure and rail transport in Russia and abroad. Richard Sultanov’s project experience includes Kazakhstan’s Transport and Logistics Masterplan, public transportation system improvements for the Moscow Department of Transport, strategic advisory and development of an operational model for the Aeroexpress company.
In 2014 Richard Sultanov joined Brunswick Rail as Head of Strategic Marketing Department.
From 2015 until 2017 Richard Sultanov was employed as Director of Strategic Marketing, Development and Communications at Brunswick Rail. Richard Sultanov’s responsibilities included development of Brunswick Rail’s strategy, analysis of rail, commodity and financial markets. Also Richard Sultanov actively participated in the debt restructuring ($600 mln Eurobond traded on the LSE) project at Brunswick Rail, led a research project looking at the economic effectiveness of next generation railcars, prepared documents for the Strategic and Credit Committees of Brunswick Rail’s Board of Directors. Richard Sultanov left Brunswick Rail in 2017.
